SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS FOR DIGITAL SIGNAGE IN PERTH

Security Considerations For Digital Signage in Perth

Digital signs are being installed at a growing rate all over Perth! It’s no wonder they can be seen at the shops, transport centres, stadiums and restaurants; they are VERY effective signs and customers LOVE them.  People today crave smart, well connected, info-rich data to help with decision making.  Digital signage and touchscreen technology are becoming more popular as people demand new technologies. With adoption rates to new technologies getting shorter and shorter, it is very likely that touchscreen digital signage will be widespread in Perth in our daily lives within the next 12-18 months.

With any form of digital signage, it is important to consider security. Unfortunately, there are always people out there that want to steal or cause damage and embarrassment to a business.  Security for digital signage is somewhat unique in that the business has to consider both physical security, digital and network security.

Physical security

The first thing a business should consider is the physical security of their digital signage. Physical security of signs is something that is sometimes overlooked by a business which is more likely to invest in thousands of dollars on digital security.  Digital signage equipment is expensive and can be easily damaged or stolen. Considerations for the physical security of digital signage should include:

  • Physical security can be as simple as a locked door or padlock or more complex like an access code.
  • Consider whether the digital signage device can be easily taken apart and access gained to the hard drive or compact flash media.  A well-designed device should allow limited access.
  • Any power buttons, cd/dvd drive access and ports should be locked and inaccessible to the public.

Digital and Network security

The most vulnerable part of digital signage for a business is the computer!  Any computer system needs to be hardened and optimised against hackers.  If hackers gain access to the computer systems of the digital signage, they can cause irreparable damage and embarrassment to a business!

Network connections allow remote access and control of the computer system for the digital signage.  This means that managers and IT people can access the system from anywhere that has an internet connection. While network connection has many benefits, it also offers hackers a way to gain access to the computer system.

Here are some tips on protecting digital and network security of digital signage:

  • Security software including anti-virus and anti-spyware should be installed on any computer systems.  These systems should always be set to update automatically;
  • Firewall security should be installed to protect internal networks;
  • All data should be backed up;
  • Use strong passwords and change them regularly.
